Husband-and-wife sheep farmers converted this windswept curve of the Norwegian coast into an architectural landmark. Domes light underground bunkers carved into the landscape, each decorated with modern and vintage pieces, hand-painted murals, and art installations. Floor-to-ceiling glass entrances look out on Hosnasand Beach and the distant Halten lighthouse. And most days end with a soak in the barrel-like, wood-heated hot tubs.
Free iPad rentals, white-on-white leather furnishings, cute naming conventions (B Active gym, B Nourished restaurant)—sound familiar? Robin and Sue Ricketts, who helped create and manage such luxurious island hotels as Malliouhana and Cap Juluca. Now the Ricketts have embarked upon a new project: the 27-room Anacaona Boutique Hotel, a stylish and affordable alternative on an island that is known for its sky-high prices. The modern, tropical rooms (Frette linens; gold and lime pillows; iPod docking stations) look out onto one of two swimming pools, and those on the upper floors have vistas of the sea. The mile-long Meads Bay beach is just steps from the property.
North Carolina’s Outer Banks don’t actually end at the Virginia state line. Sandbridge, 25 minutes south of Virginia Beach, sits at the northern tip of the OBX, where you’ll find a tiny residential community with a couple of restaurants, an outfitter for kayaking, and a chic condo next to the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park. Bring a bike so you can explore the refuge and the state park (which lacks an access road). sandbridgebeachva.com

Total Cost: The cost of your trip will depend on the room rate, airfare, train tickets, or gas, if you are driving. Some top beach vacation destinations will be more expensive and others will be cheaper also based on the availability of food. If the only place to get dinner is the resort restaurant, you can expect to spend more than if you can go to a local café. Be sure to factor in the cost of activities and spa treatments because they can add to 100s of dollars per day. Look for all inclusive packages in major resort destinations like the Caribbean, Thailand, Bali, Maldives and other beach trip ideas.
Come see why Corolla has been named to numerous "best beaches" lists. It's really no surprise, considering the Outer Banks coastline boasts 120 miles of sand, sea and serenity. The appeal of these windswept sands, refreshing sea breezes and vast blue skies has drawn visitors to the Outer Banks and transformed Corolla from a simple seaside fishing village to an upscale vacation destination. Activities on Corolla's North Carolina beaches go beyond sunbathing and splashing in the surf. The beaches in Corolla are pet-friendly year round, and off-road vehicles are welcome on 4WD-accessible shorelines north of town. Then, there are the famous wild horses of Corolla, which can be spotted on an excursion with a local Corolla Wild Horse Tour.

This seaside village has a well-deserved reputation for being home to the best beach on the Oregon Coast. Its natural beauty even led to National Geographic listing it as one of the most beautiful places in the world! If beauty inspires art, it’s no wonder that Cannon Beach was also named one of America’s best art towns, and art enthusiasts will love the numerous festivals, galleries, and displays. Sculpture of a different kind can be seen at the town’s annual sandcastle contest held each June. Food is an art form itself, and the cafés, microbreweries, and restaurants serve up a selection of fresh seafood and local specialties. Oregon beaches

Eager to move on after a protracted civil war, Sri Lanka has hit that intriguing sweet spot—when a place is stirring with change but not yet overrun. Bentota, on the beach-lined southwestern coast, is one center of activity. Noted architect Geoffrey Bawa designed this building, which was renovated and renamed Avani in late 2011. The 75 rooms are large and contemporary, with rain showers and private patios. Some face the palm-ringed pool, with the shimmering Indian Ocean beyond.
